Reject The Symptoms!

When asked recently whether I was going to get a winter flu jab, the person asking seemed slightly surprised at my answer; I said, “No.” Despite being over 50 and, from the world’s perspective, probably vulnerable to the flu, the reason I said no was that, when flu symptoms try to get to me, I tell them to get out in the name of Jesus – and they go.

Within the Healing Rooms we learn that symptoms are like a package delivery which we can either accept or reject. One team member used to announce each year that, when he first felt the flu symptoms around him, he would be having the flu for the next two weeks – and then he did! But once he had understood that, in Christ he didn’t have to accept the symptoms, he didn’t get the flu.

Jesus has all authority in Heaven and on the Earth and He has delegated it to His followers to stand against the enemy and his works, and that includes sickness and disease (cp. Acts 10:38).

Just as soon as the symptoms start knocking declare that, “I will not partner nor agree with these symptoms and, in the name (i.e. the authority) of Jesus I command them to get out of my body and go back to the pit!” Then forcefully breathe out through your nose and then your mouth to make the point that you expect them to go.

James 4:7 tells us, “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (NLT) So that’s what we do and, 95% of the time, the symptoms just leave. So many followers of Jesus end up suffering with flu unnecessarily, simply because they don’t know any better.

What about the other 5% of the time when the symptoms hang on? This can only happen when our authority in Christ has been compromised and Jesus wants to address some issue or sinful attitude in our lives. Sin will give the devil a foothold in our lives (Eph 4:26-27; Genesis 4:7); asking Jesus what is wrong and then repenting will close the door and restore our authority. This is why the “humble yourselves before God” comes before the “resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

So, this winter when the symptoms turn up, don’t accept them. Humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
